Graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 1983. Studied Fine Art (drawing and painting) under the tutelage of Barbara Rae.
After leaving art school I pursued a career in music as a guitarist. For me, my practice as an artist is inseparable from my practice as a musician. I returned to committed practice as a visual artist ten years ago. My process is guided by and a reaction to, the music I am listening to whilst working. This can be anything from visceral punk rock, gentle ambient electronica to emotive and stirring classical pieces both contemporary and historical. Artistically, I was and continue to be influenced by abstraction. Whilst at Glasgow School of Art I discovered the work of Robert Rauschenberg which led me to the Abstract Expressionists, particularly Cy Twombly and Joan Mitchell. I do however base my own practice in rigorous observational drawing as I believe this to be at the core of worthwhile endeavour for both artist and viewer. I am an eternal student. Picasso is of course, my most prevalent, lifelong teacher.
