Artist - Chris Nugent

I am a painter of the built and natural environment. I live in the city of Edinburgh but make regular visits to the coast. These coastal trips have resulted in an additional interest in old boats and fishing vessels. These three subjects have dominated my work for the past few years but are quite distinct from each other.

The Seascapes deal with the effects of changing light on the land, sea and sky. This work is loose, often broad brush and mainly acrylic although I also use oil pastel or chalk.

The Cityscapes are often from elevated viewpoints around Edinburgh as I want to capture the layering and diminishing of form that takes place between foreground and background. These pieces are heavily surfaced, multi layered, mixed media using a range of materials such as newspaper, fabric, textured papers, cardboard, polyfilla, glue ,acrylic paint. They can be in both a tradional/realistic loose style and a more abstract representation.

I do not limit myself to one city, my last solo show combined both Manhattan and Edinburgh and was a direct result of a family holiday in NYC.

The boats adopt similar working processes as the cities and use the same materials and sometimes sand and grasses. I am drawn to both their weathered surfaces and with fishing boats their colour and variety of shapes.
