Clare was brought up in rural North East Scotland, she later studied painting at the Leith School of Art and Cumbria College of Art. She was delighted to be awarded the Scottish Arts Club prize in 2017 at the annual RSW exhibition and has exhibited throughout the UK. Edinburgh is now where she calls home. Her studio space is at WASPS Patriothall in Stockbridge.
My landscape paintings try to capture something of the changeable nature of the Scottish climate with lively brushstrokes and rich colour.
I seek to describe the essence of a place. Water, sea and skies provide a constant source of fascination and ongoing challenge to my practice. I return to places I have visited and are in one way or another important to me. Colours that speak and an attempt to put down in paint something about the feel of what I am looking at.
Drawing throughout my process provides a structure to what I am trying to do. Nothing stands still and this observation of shifting light, clouds and reflection continues to intrigue me. Haphazard patterns from the natural world meet human attempts of taming and domesticity. Lively brushstrokes and rich colour are my tools. Views from Catterline, St Cyrus and the Mearns have a lifelong connection and familiarity to me while Iona has been an association made within the last ten years, shorter but perhaps no less enriching.
