Diane was born in 1965 in Sheffield and received her BA Hons Fine Art at Demontfort University in Leicester. She has lived and worked in Edinburgh for half her life and is now a full-time artist working from her home studio.
She mainly works in acrylics and has a highly realistic, figurative style and mainly concentrates on representational painting. Although she enjoys painting a wide range of subject matter, her love of the figure, which was instilled at college, is her overriding passion with a particular focus on portraiture. She has a very sensitive approach to her subject and enjoys the versatility of the acrylic medium which she uses almost as water colour, building up delicate, but evermore opaque, layers of paint.
Diane works on a mainly commission basis and as well as enjoying a traditional approach to the portrait she has recently developed a novel type of portrait painting featuring full-figure miniatures of her subjects. These are mainly in a coastal or ‘neutral’ setting which she calls ‘Imaginescapes’ as they allow the subject to dwell in a land where their relationship to self can be radically re-imagined. These figure paintings, on average only a few inches high, are beautifully detailed and continue in the tradition of the miniature albeit in larger scale framing.
Diane can either work directly with the subject as ‘artist and sitter’, but is also particularly adept at utilising photography to help in the staging of the final image.
“The process of my portrait painting is painstaking and detailed, yet not remote. The results are approachable and friendly and enable the sitters to have a unique relationship with their ‘painted’ selves.”
