After discovering a love for clay at an early age, I went on to study Ceramics at degree level and have been working with ceramics ever since.
The paper-like scrolls in my work were inspired by a trip to the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem. Here I was enchanted by the thousands of wishes and prayers written on paper and crammed between the stones of the wall. I was inspired by the collective focus for so many people’s hopes at this ancient site and their interaction with it.
I use a combination of techniques to create my pieces. The vases are slip cast then individual scrolls are rolled and applied in different sizes for visual interest and to accommodate a variety of stem sizes. I use white earthenware clay which achieves a clean white finish allowing a crisp contrast to the bright colours on the insides of the scrolls. Each piece is fired to 3-4 times achieving a top temperature of 1120ºC. My vases are glazed inside and out so they are able to hold water for fresh flowers.
My versatile vases strike a balance between a sculptural aesthetic and a practical function.
