Following a successful career as a consultant gynaecologist, Gillian has devoted much of the last ten years to painting, drawing, and print-making. She was a full-time student at Leith School of Art from 2013-17 and was awarded the Eliza Clifford Prize at the end of this period of study.
Gillian works mainly in acrylic, finding that its quick-drying property lends itself to her preferred hard-edged style. She also uses watercolour and relief print-making; sometimes combining these materials in mixed media pieces. Her subject matter is diverse, but focuses on landscape, still life, and the built environment.
Whatever the subject and whatever the materials used, her over-arching goal is to produce representational pieces which are also visually pleasing if viewed as abstract paintings. The harmonious placement of lines, shapes, tones and colours on the picture-plane is more important than an accurate and realistic depiction of the subject.
Gillian has had a solo exhibition at the Gairloch Heritage Museum and has contributed to mixed exhibitions at North East Open Studios; L’Age Baston, France; Tweeddale Centre, Peebles; and Leith School of Art.
