Malcolm has principally been a painter of landscapes and still life but, for many years now he has worked in an increasingly non-representational format. Much of this shift from representational painting to a more abstract approach has been inspired by his frequent visits to St.Ives, where the rich tradition of the St.Ives school of painting has held a special interest for him.
Every piece of work is an adventure, and he doesn’t know where it will end up until he feels he has arrived as each painting undergoes constant change until the tensions of the composition are right.
He uses his many sketchbook studies and drawings as a starting point for his work from which a fully abstract painting often develops, but at the outset he doesn’t have a fixed form in mind, preferring to let the imagery develop during the process of painting. !
His concern is not with producing a likeness but in capturing the characteristics of a subject. However, regardless of whether he is painting in a figurative or non-figurative format his work always demonstrates the abstract principles of balance, form, tone, colour and division of space.
Malcolm is Vice President of The Manchester Academy Of Fine Art and a signature member of The Pastel Society. His work has been selected to be exhibited in many national exhibitions including the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, The Royal Society of British Artists, The Pastel Society, The Royal Institute Of Oil Painters, The Royal Institute Of Painters in Watercolour, The Royal Society Of Marine Artists and The Royal Glasgow Institute Of Fine Art.
