As a ceramic artist I make vessels derived from the historical tradition of pot making. Pots that not only have a sense of purpose, but are also playful. Vessels that invite you to explore tactile engagement playing on a curiosity of objects familiar in everyday life.
Having lived in rural Donegal for over 20 years along the shoreline of Lough Swilly, my work makes many references to the landscape and industrial farming architecture that surrounds my home.
Corrosion, erosion and distressed surfaces tell their own story, of time and how nature plays its role in our everyday life, and my fascination with these surfaces is integrated into my work.
Working with slabs of clay I stretch, curve and cut as well as bat, scrape back and smooth over to create forms that become of interest and often partners each other.
Each element of the techniques I use has it’s own merit, allowing me not only to engage and explore various techniques, but to explore qualities such as surface texture, form and scale.
