MEET THE JEWELLER – JEN CUNNINGHAM – IN PERSON

Jen Cunningham will spend time at The Velvet Easel Gallery on Saturday 8th February between 13.30 – 15.30hrs showing us how she creates her beautiful work. Jen’s jewellery has been very much admired in the gallery since it opened and many lucky people have been recipients of gifts of her beautiful rings, cufflinks, earrings and necklaces depicting the Arthurs Seat skyline in Edinburgh since then.

I knew quite early on in life that I wanted to do something creative as it has always been when creating that I feel most comfortable. I studied jewellery design at university and have been making my own range of landscape inspired pieces ever since. There are a lot of little islands around the west coast of Scotland, where I grew up, to take inspiration from, so this is where my landscape inspired pieces started. I love making jewellery and it gives me a huge amount of pleasure that people want to wear it too! There are always lots of things to learn and there is always room for improvement which keeps me motivated.

I have my jewellery bench in a shared workshop in Summerhall, we are all jewellers but doing different things, this is great for bouncing ideas off one another. We also support each other if something goes wrong at the bench! In fact, it was through one of my studio colleagues that Roz found me and asked about having my work in hThe Velvet Easel Gallery, I jumped at the chance!

I spend a surprising amount of time away from my jewellery bench, drawing designs, ordering metal and stones or editing photos of my latest commissions. I try to spend a couple of days in the workshop a week at least but I don’t stick to a 9-5 working day. I have learned over the years that if I’m not in the mood for making jewellery I won’t be happy with the end result, so I will stay at the bench for hours when the mood takes me!

Working with The Velvet Easel Gallery has been great, Roz was really keen to hear what I, as a jeweller, needed from a gallery which was very refreshing. The communication has been great, and I wouldn’t hesitate recommending her gallery to friends looking to buy as well as fellow jewellers and artists!
