My work explores light, colour and movement in land and cityscape.
I am influenced by early Cezanne, the Colourists, Eardley and Nash/Ravilous as well as contemporary figures like Peter Brown and Danny Ross.
As a personality, I am restless and easily bored, and so I work in a number of media which each give me different challenges – oil painting, vibrant watercolours (no polite pastel dullness here !) and linocut, as well as scraperboard etching. The subject commands the choice of medium for me.
Since moving to Edinburgh from rural Aberdeenshire, the built environment and the coast have given me a rich vein of inspiration. I aim that my works are always striking and never formulaic. I am only interested in being completely true to myself to find new and interesting ways to express a place.
