David Mola was born in Spain in 1971.
His fascination with glass started early: he was born in a glazier shop, and this material surrounded him during his childhood.
David works predominantly with with both stained and bespoke kiln glass, using glass as my main creative material but mixing it with other materials, always looking for contrast, balance and dialogue between them.
He studied at the “Centre del Vidre” in Barcelona.
He also earned a degree in photography and audiovisual communication from the Complutense University of Madrid.
David is an applied artist . The majority of his work is functional and utilitarian. His primary concern being how each piece fits into its environment. As such, when designing and making a piece of stained glass David thinks about such things as how the light passing through it will change the atmosphere of the space and how this might affect the work itself and those viewing it, both aesthetically and emotionally.
His inspiration comes from natural imagery, sometimes from very delicate magnified images, sometimes form abstractions coming from nature.
All his work is largely influenced by the colours, shapes and pictorial style of medieval stained glass, however achieved in a contemporary vein.
For twelve years he has managed his own studio where he works on both private and public commissions as well as doing ongoing research into a variety of glass techniques.
On 2015 he won the Special Award “Ashton Hill” By The Worshipful Company of Glaziers & Painters of Glass.
He is a Member of the Contemporary Glass Society.
He currently lives and works in Edinburgh, Scotland.
