I grew up in the village of Wanlockhead in Dumfrieshire and went on to achieve an honours degree in Interior Design at Edinburgh College of Art and subsequently studied to become an Art therapist at Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh.
My childhood memories of growing up within a small village community are a continuous source of inspiration for me. I remember small dwellings, family gatherings, music and story telling, precious moments in village life which had so much warmth, despite times of complete isolation in the winter months when we were often snowed in for weeks at a time. The magic of being wee and going out to play and adventure, raking round and gathering stuff from my dads garage and building gang huts and go carts. I loved visiting my gran and being in awe of her biscuit tins full of jewel specked buttons and tins of just incase things, all wrapped in the glory of the aroma of home baking. At night sleeping under a weight of blankets in the attic bedroom that you had to climb a wooden ladder to get to, The quiet content of night and watching sparkly stars and waves of blues through the skylight window.
I often like to explore a sense of place in my work, I love looking round harbours, lighthouses and boatyards and the thrill of discovering nooks and crannies which I can photograph and examine later. I enjoy the process of gathering bits and pieces that I can use in paintings at some stage. I absolutely love working with paint and approach using it with a combination of playfulness, curiosity and gesture.
I exhibit my work in galleries and other venues throughout the uk, and also do privately commissioned work.
