Like taking a deep breath of sea air, or running my hands through long dried grasses, painting is an instinctive response to my beautiful and dynamic surroundings.
I grew up in Cape Town, South Africa. It is a profoundly creative city, driven by entrepreneurship, hardship and sunshine. I qualified in both industrial and textile design and worked as a freelance commercial designer until moving to the UK nearly 20 years ago. I have since worked in various mediums, from silversmithing to pen and ink drawing.
In 2005, I moved to The Isle of Skye and discovered the wonderful freedom of being able to roam sheep paths and seaweed strewn beaches, and to cast to memory a vast collection of visual reference. When I begin to paint, I lay down colours and lines, and as I build the layers, stories begin to emerge. I can only liken this process to having a wonderful dream, where here and there something resonates as ‘based in reality’. Sometimes it is the shape of a hill, perhaps a wee shed or maybe a tree or a fence, that takes my work from semi-abstract to identifying with a specific occasion or place.
My studio overlooks Loch Snizort, and the view takes in every change in weather and wildlife, not matter how tiny or dramatic. I walk my dog up the forestry tracks, drink my coffee on the shore, and when I paint I am able to create little windows to my world.
