The territory I engage with is the ambiguous space that lies between abstraction and figuration, this is a place where the viewer is invited in to form their own conclusions and interpretations; as the artist I am using improvisation and spontaneity to explore the possibilities which lie before me. This involves the pushing and pulling of the physical and metaphorical elements into tensions and harmonies that will lead to the paintings conclusion. I am aware that I am translating my experience of being alive in the environment a process which involves my taking mental and physical notes which I feel is as much unconscious as it is conscious. The contemplative observation of the developing images are as important as the physical application of media. This is a working process which involves daily practice and engagement, the physicality of application, scraping back, erasing and forming is at once reductive and additive in nature.
I graduated from Loughborough School of Art in 1992 with a First class Honours degree in Fine Art Painting/Art History and alongside my practice I have also taught painting, drawing and life drawing in Art colleges and Privately to both children and adults. My work is held in private collections in the UK, Europe, Australia, USA, Canada and Hong Kong.
