Morven Ferguson is a printmaker and painter currently based in Edinburgh. Ferguson explores landscape, colour, light and movement in her printmaking. Locations very familiar to her such as nearby Arbroath cliffs and coastal areas of East Lothian have inspired this body of work. Ferguson is drawn towards the sea, particularly costal rock formations and their unusual shapes and textures. Ferguson explores strong contrasts in light and dark, suggesting the ever-changing atmosphere of the landscape.
Ferguson explores the interplay between digital and analogue processes within her work. Recently discovering the digital method of laser cutting has been an exciting development in her practice. Combining the precise detail of a photographic laser cut image with her intuitive printmaking approach.
Ferguson’s colour palette is vibrant. Intense blue and contrasting flashes of orange evoking powerful and atmospheric seascapes and landscapes. There is an ambiguity to the images depicted, allowing for multiple readings of the work. Ferguson creates one off pieces of work, approaching printmaking in a painterly and expressive way. Ferguson will print with the same plate multiple times. Creating variations by overprinting multiple layers she aims to formulate unique pieces that can stand alone or be displayed as a cohesive set.
