Born and bred in Portobello, Edinburgh, Avril Scott is a self-taught artist presently working with alcohol ink on a wax base. The ink flows beautifully over the wax and can be manipulated using a heat gun or air diffuser, and occasionally a brush!
She has found that this mix of ink and wax is delicate and unstable and can be prone to fading and flaking and for this reason she has her work professionally printed onto birch or poplar plywood. This ensures longevity and also gives a beautiful texture to the piece as the grain of the wood shines through and incorporates itself into the painting.
Lastly, each piece is finished by hand using gesso, metal leaf, paint or ink. Although technically a print, this ensures that each piece is slightly different. Each wooden print is then framed in a box mount.
Avril works from her sheshed in the garden and is inspired by the seascapes around her home near Portobello and her many trips to East Lothian. She enjoys creating stylised landscapes which can have a dream-like quality and will often incorporate birds, the moon or the sun into her work. She describes her botanical paintings as “fantastical – the kind of thing I’d like to find in my own garden!”
